What is Random Actor?

Random Actor is an interdisciplinary project created by Clay Hopper and James Grady at Boston University, exploring new possibilities for interactive media, performance, and design. The project enables artists, designers, and performers to create dynamic, immersive environments without requiring extensive coding expertise. By incorporating computational vision, projection mapping, MIDI control, and machine learning into an accessible system, Random Actor expands interactive design across contexts ranging from theater to installation and education.

As part of the project, custom software has been developed through multiple phases. Following an initial proof of concept, Paolo Scoppola joined as an artist-in-residence in 2022 and served as the primary author of the core software, developing the system in openFrameworks, with ongoing contributions from additional developers as the project continues to evolve.
