What is Random Actor?
Random Actor is an interdisciplinary project initiated by Clay Hopper and James Grady at Boston University. The project began with early explorations, prototypes, and proofs of concept that helped define its goals, creative parameters, and potential use cases. After multiple attempts that did not generate the functional system Hopper and Grady were looking for, Paolo Scoppola designed and developed the first functional Random Actor software system from scratch in openFrameworks during his 2022 artist-in-residence at Boston University.
Today, the broader Random Actor project continues to evolve through Hopper and Grady’s creative direction, performance testing, expanded use cases, and contributions from additional collaborators and developers. Hopper guides the theatrical direction, while Grady guides the visual and creative direction. Together, they shape the project’s conceptual vision, performance language, visual system, and directed narrative storytelling.
